Only Neil (NOT Hornsey) Can Break Your Heart

This album combines Neil Young's acoustic side and the fuller band sound he employed on other albums. Some 5 star songwriting on here, with his wavering vocals able to convey the various ways to be broken hearted better than anyone else. To come up with a line as simple, obvious and true yet not said before as 'Only love can break your heart' is the mark of some kind of genius.

Oh, Lonesome Him

He plays the first few chords from Only Love Can Break Your Heart and what can you say, what can you do?

He has got a funny old squeeky voice but it is really effective for his more emotional work and there is a lot of his poignant, reflective vibe on this one. Pretty nearly every song is a bit of a classic, mate, and the standard barely drops for the entire album. There is a simplicity to these pieces that makes you wonder if there isn't really enough substance to them, that you will tire of them after a while, but I have been playing this album on and off for twenty five years so I guess we're alright on that score.

Oh, Lonesome Me is another terrific one – 70s acoustic, folk-rock, self-pity that borders the edge of comic parody but his conviction always steers him clear of trouble and instead you're left with a lingering, gnawing sadness, which is as it should be.

A great covers album

Some of these songs seem to be known as much for people covering them as for the original versions... which has to be a huge compliment to his song writing ability. I enjoy this album as a gentle backdrop to doing other stuff, but wouldn't want to dedicate serious listening time to it... I can't help but be a little irritated by his screechy voice - perhaps that's why the covers are better.
