So much to answer for...

It's an all time classic that shaped a generation, that included me. But for a couple of mediocre tracks this would be a perfect 10.

These four guys produced a band that was greater than the sum of its parts, if that's the correct expression - all four members have a huge influence on the sound, each with their own unique style - nurturing a number of tracks over years of live performances resulting in this album and the 12inch releases that came around it. These tracks perfectly reflected the time and place they were created in, and it's not surprising they couldn't repeat the feat with a follow up.

I am the Resurrection will be played in clubs for decades to come, and it will never get tiresome.

Listening to it 20 years on, it sounds musically conservative and very 60s, with only hints of the baggy sound they were meant to spawn. There's undeniably some great songs on here, but it's no killer album, although millions would disagree. As an album of cultural importance for the acid house era though, that is not in doubt. Soundtrack for a generation and all that.

This is perceived as an all time classic. There are little passages of invention and excitement where I can get why people are so into this album, but mostly I struggle to see beyond what I find a largely ordinary collection of songs delivered fairly straightforwardly.

It opens with a lovely sparkly piece, which gets into a terrific, insistent groove, with vocals that fit perfectly into the sound. The closing song where the singer takes the vocal up a register works wonderfully and they go off in sorts of interesting directions here, that's another really strong song, to finish the album nicely. In between times I find it largely indigestible 60s throwback stuff with only rare moments of invention to connect it with the exciting dance based rock stuff that was bubbling up at the time.

Elizabeth My Dear is a song well worth playing to anyone who claims this is a great album, this is the low point for me and they have definitely been badly advised. Why take on a famous Simon and Grafunkel standard, where you are basically setting your vocal against one of the most perfect, sweet voices of pop, ideal for a soppy English folk song? The vocal is extremely exposed here and he is just highlighting what he can't do. Bad decision.

I do like the bass, which has a heavy 60s sound to it but also a funky, dancey feel in the playing. The feel generally however is a lot more straight-ahead rock than I remembered it. Overall, it's not my sort of sound anyway but if you don't have particular fond memories to associate with hearing the music at the time, I wonder how much you might get out of this.
