One of the most influential bands of the late 20th century get their sound together before their later Loveless LP. Highly inventive use of guitars and nod to 60s songwriting put through the blender. Makes the brain synapses pop which is a' good thing'.

It takes a while to climb through the murky grime and fuzz that is the sound this album presents, but eventually it all becomes clear and there's some super tracks in here. The louder you play it, the more it makes sense.

A classic album inspiring a whole generation to do likewise, but I'll let Bean talk about that.

I Can See It (But I Can’t Feel It)

The band’s reputation as extreme volume pushers I felt to be a somewhat dubious attraction and it did make me suspicious of their ability to be pioneering in any meaningful way, however having listened to this album I found there were some clever and original approaches in here. Altough, perhaps because I knew that this was the album directly before their famous and acclaimed Loveless, I felt it did have elements that seemed half fulfilled. For example the idea they developed of dropping the vocal right back in the mix so that it is a barely audible wash is quite an interesting one, but here it is done a little half heartedly and it just sounds a bit like the vocals are poorly recorded. Likewise, moments when you felt you should be being assaulted with a massive wash of distorted electronic noise they didnt quite go for it convincingly, even using acoustic instruments for the noisy bits on ocassions.

The best songs on here though are very striking, original and memorable and a good advert for, at the very least, taking an interest in their next album.

Not for me. Sorry Bean.

Some tracks show some initial promise before the drums and thrashing guitar kicks in. A racket and an unoriginal one at that. Lyrics lost in the mire.
