Stylish and Soothing

A real listening adventure for me. So many tempos, styles and influences. It’s like 5 albums in one. Varies from the rough and raucous Electricity to the calm and soothing Stay with Me. Excellent. Several tracks have multiple layers of vocals which wash over you nicely. Loved track 3 with the repeated theme ....probably just…. And Cop Shoot Cop wonderful evolving and building one this.

A proper album – with a nice range of approaches but also with an overall sound. There are some very well constructed lyrics, I think I’m In Love (probably just hungry) being a particular high point. I liked the noisy, chaotic bits, even if they were perhaps a bit stereotypical. There was lovely string section in Broken Hearts, this was such a simple song but sung with enough conviction to carry it. Many of the pieces are very simple – four bar patterns repeated ad infinitum – and I wonder how many repeated plays it will hold up to.

It is rather reminiscent of Primal Scream – it’s probably obvious to point out, but I’m not too proud to do so. There’s a gospelly choir, a harmonica, a hammond B3, the same languid pace and probably the same vocal coach. So I wouldn’t claim it be a particularly original sound but I still think this is a terrific, quality album pretty much throughout.

Still can't decide whether I really like this album or not. Depending on your mood, it can be uplifting and invigourating or just downright depressing. Singing about a break up isn't original, and certainly not a recipe for fun, but musically this has a lot of variations. Some interesting mad moments, reminiscent of Mercury Rev, and lots of mellow looping softness. Interesting, at least.

Good sleeve, I can see where Damien Hirst got his ideas from now

Objectively a good listen, well played and all that. But I don't see it as the classic album it's feted to be. I like some of the more zen Spacmen 3 moments, but a lot of the blustering leaves me cold, all wigging out, brass sections and bombast. And it's too long.
