Memories of romantic encounters...

A massive blast of nostalgia for me, this was an album that hit all the right spots for me and thousands of other college kids at the time. Now, it does sound dated and rather under-produced, bit it's what they wanted it, and when you're in the right mood it still sounds gorgeous.

Another Day is up there with my all time fave tracks.

This isn’t music that is necessarily aimed at happy go lucky types like my good self but I’d have to say that it’s a very well done sound. It’s a sound that’s on the edge of shambolic, with meandering tuning throughout. It never falls apart but it’s close enough at times to give it a certain tension. It’s that amateurishness and low production values, combined with strong song writing that gives it a sort of authenticity that really appeals to certain types.

It’s an archetypal shoe-gazey sound that launched a thousand pretty miserable ships, but you can’t hold them entirely responsible for that. I really like the lead voice, it has a fragile flawed quality to it, just missing the notes most of the time but never too far out. There’s also a nice occasional use of searing electric lead guitar lines that gives enough of a lift to ensure you never feel totally suffocated.

The last song I found slightly obvious and simplistic and it left a slightly sickly after taste on finishing the album, isn't that a pity. Otherwise this is great example of a particular approach taken to its well explored conclusion - that’s all you can ever really ask of an album.

Gone out

I expected this to be better, but the grating vocals and harsh production did for me. If the songs were stronger this would have mattered less.
