I’m pickin’ up good vibrations

I reckon Mr Panda Bear is someone who loves being in the studio and has probably spent ages in there, and on his laptop, trying out technique after technique, overlaying more and more vocals and backwards sounds and rubbish and generally getting carried away. This maybe needs some hard task master to come in and strip the thing down, tell him which bits can be chopped out, which bits can be expanded on and generally exert some discipline. This is where a band can be helpful and Animal Collective does seem a bit more structured in comparison.

Having said that I thought this was a great album, full of invention and tunes, nice ideas and sounds. Maybe all that obvious self-indulgence helps to bring it to life. As a point of reference, the obvious influence is all that Beach Boys stuff but the vocal layering did remind me a bit of ELO, maybe just because I have been playing some of that recently. It's also a bit Beta Band-ish in that he is throwing in absolutely everything – stupid out of time samples and the like – and seems unable to contain himself and his ideas.

All the pieces do sound a bit sketchy, often you'll get half a song's worth of a riff, attached to a completely unrelated idea but there is enough of a mix of catchy pop tunes and textured weirdness to keep you engaged and surprised.

Another talented individual. I actually rate this higher than his Animal Collective output. Certain sections are wonderful.

Despite all the obvious Beach Boys influence, this animal has his own sound, particularly his layered vocal style. For something allegedly recorded while he was on holiday in Portugal it's a coherent album, with plenty of oddness to satisfy electronic music fans.

Not as good as the Beach Boys

The general consensus seems to be that this chap knows his way around the studio, but for me it's not enough. He layers samples and vocals creating some pleasing sounds, but they promise more than they deliver. The result is wispy and airy and the album doesn't seem to know whether it wants to be ambient, pop or dance; it sits somewhere in the middle.
