I'm a bit biased on this chap. I think he is great. A real modern approach to the blues; incredible when you realise he was 74 when this album was made. But probablya bit too patchy to be heralded as a great album.

No it is, really - my middle name. Anyhow, some great grooves and riffs were set up in the course of this album, with modern and interesting treatments, but I'm not too sure how developed these were as songs and I also felt it was lacking shape as an album.

A strong sequence of good songs, with a mix of effects, nice funky playing and a variety of arrangements ran through roughly the first half of the album from a few tracks in. From there on in the energy and imagination seemed to wane a bit and, barring a couple of exceptions, it felt all a lot more conventional, with the rhythms more leaden.

It is an album that does sound strikingly good in places but which doesnt necessarily bear playing right through.

For me you can forget the blues stuff, it all sounds the same, isn't it? But R.L.'s so called crossover tracks are great... funky, uplifting, powerful and very enjoyable. Nothing too complex worth getting over analytical about, just good no nonsense dancy rock music.

A partially sucessful attempt to kick some life back in the blues, a dreadfully overmined musical genre, with some sort of Beck-esque grooves giving a modern backbeat to some of R'L's chops. Thankfully, the lowest common denominator of blues, the 12 bar, is avoided and R.L left to his own devices can bang out a lonesome tune not unlike pioneers like Robert Johnson (Bird Without a Feather). As an album it's suffers from a lack of continuity, and the 'modern' touches are not up to date enough for me, but there's enough entertaining stuff on here to enjoy. R.L Burnside did murder someone though, so minus points for that. Plus if he sold his soul to the devil like Robet Johnson, the afterlife doesn't prognosis don't look good...
