Let's flippin' wrestle!

Well I chose this because I like it, so my review is bound to be favourable. Having seen these cheeky chappies develop over the last couple of years, this is a polished album (by their standards) which ticks all the right boxes for me.

They're raw, inexperienced, error prone, and at times not particularly great musicians, but this album is full of pop hits making it extremely listenable. Who knows, it may be all they ever produce... but probably not.

Let's Wrestle.

I guess the first thing that makes an impression on me is some truly dreadful lyric writing. I like the idea that they sing in plain English about everyday things and that they attempt to inject some humour into proceedings but the quality of the song writing, and lyric writing in particular, is jarringly low. Song For Old People is a piece to be ashamed of in all sorts of ways, for a lifetime and no matter what you may achieve afterwards. Offensive humour that isn't funny is just offensive, just like with the Diana song, they forgot to think of anything funny or intelligent to say in their rush to try and give a cheap shock. Very poor.

At the other end of their quality scale was My Schedule which added a bit of desperation, sadness and self-effacement to offset what was in danger of feeling like an irredeemably frivolous and puerile album-full of jolly tosh. Fair dues the bass player is pretty tricky, but overall the sound is that of an amateur pub rock band, like many that you could have heard from the 70s onwards, I don't have a problem with that or the homespun DIY aesthetic but these songs just aren't good enough, I would say.
