A near perfect psychedelic 60s pop album. Most bands I've heard from this era have musicians who can make their guitars do funky stuff, but few have the originality and variation - and pure delightfulness - in their songs to make it as listenable as this.

From Baby Blue onwards I found this an enjoyable album. But prior to that, I couldn't see past the 60s style singing and old-fashioned pop guitar jangle. It's interesting to see this album at the crossroads, as psychedelic pop largely gave way to psychedelic rock and I can feel a bit of tension in that crossover. From this vantage point, 40 years in the future, it appears that they seem reluctant to move forward into the next era. A few songs seem to be leading up to a big old noisy guitar solo and a bit of cutting loose but the solos end up being disappointing; a bit flat and brief. Apparently this is deliberate but it just feels like a bit of a tease.

I'll come clean and admit the 60s pop sound is something I don't enjoy. I've been trying to think what are the various elements that annoy me – in no particular order, it's a combination of a slightly hurried pace; a shrill, treble-heavy and raw sound; largely poetic and witless lyrics; odd pseudo-medieval modal style chord changes; over use of vocal harmonising; a largely polite restraint and probably some other things. 13th Floor Elevators are by no means guilty of all these things but you can very much hear them tied into aspects of that 60s approach, on the first half of the album. That is no crime, they were a 60s band after all, and undoubtedly they were ahead of the game and original and unusual for the time but I can't quite place a lot of this in the modern realm, even where I could possibly with their peers like early Floyd or Velvet Underground. The second half of the album does seem to move forward into a much more contemporary mode. Baby Blue you could almost imagine as a present day cover of that song. Dust and Postures sound very much like songs that REM would love to have written. And overall it takes on a freer and more vibrant sound, to my ears anyway.

The band use this funny old compressed phased percussive pulsing sound throughout, which turns out to be the electric jug, who’d have thought? It's an interesting idea and makes for a great story to have an electric jug player as a leader of an otherwise standard-issue 4 piece rock outfit but in practice the sound is irritating once you become conscious of it, I even wondered at one point if it might be some accidental over-recording on my copy, so incessant is it and so insensitively does it correspond to changes in the songs even, occasionally, to their tempo. I wonder why the electric jug sound never get repeated by any of the other 50 million bands in the world that have played forms of popular music? I think I’ll only need one guess.
