Kurt Wagner is a bit of a cult figure, you always read and hear good things about Lambchop, I got the Nixon album on the strength of a review and am (still) keen to understand the basis of his critical acclaim. There’s a nice gentle sound, it’s varied and musically quite rich, he has a neat and clever turn of phrase and I quite like his voice but that style of 'singing' / talking is quite draining after a while. He's barely managing to sing at all, which ends up making it all feel a bit whimsical and light. I guess he's more a poet / lyricist rather than a singer, although his indistinct vocals are so hard pick out even if paying close attention, that I can't be too sure.

This is an album that really needs a tune or two to stop it sounding dreary, it sounds so light and quiet, like it might evaporate away, the few times tuneful passages come in it sounds gorgeous and it all starts to make sense. Sadly that isn't really often enough.

Rather disappointed by this album - I was hoping for so much better. It's beautiful, with nice musical arrangements of strings, brass and guitars, but the songs aren't there to back it up. The first track is wonderful, but nothing that follows reaches the same standard. His vocals are hard work, you just want him to sing! Maybe more vocal harmonies would have helped. Good, but not what it could have been.
