If I had to pick an album from Ms Bush’s fine collection of works this would probably top my list. Nearly every song is a great piece - the album is full of variety and musical ideas.

There is a wonderfully simple construction in the arrangements, the sound is not cluttered at all but it is very musical, things are developing but it always sounds very natural and has a very unfussy pop feel. Each song has a little device or a peculiar sound or two that is showcased in turn, nothing else competes with that (maybe a fretless bass sound or little synth twiddle or some percussive noise), it is given room to itself in quite a sparse sound. I think this is terrific and shows real well founded confidence in the songwriting and performing.

Overall, this album has a perfect blend of simplicity and sophistication. And in the end I'm left wondering why I don't like her music more than l do. Partly it is the lyrics which are a bit silly, allegorical, poetic and narrative-based and I just don't really connect to hardly anything in them. Partly it is her voice. She has a fantastic range and can hit all the notes, but it gets a bit weird and overly dramatic at times and somehow has this other wordly-ness which is both its strength and weakness. Her voice is probably really the thing that polarises people's opinion on her, which is shame - I'm not necessarily a fan of her singing but beyond that some truly wonderful things are happening.

I can't muster the same enthusiasm for this album as others seem to. Kate's style of vocals I find a little too dramatic, her powerful and slightly masculine voice often makes me cringe. The musical elements and use of effects on the album are interesting and no doubt quite original in places, but it all seems a bit experimental and lacking in fluidity to me.
