Hard to deny that the kids have got this one right

As much as I wanted to hate this album, after a few listens it's infectious, and in a good way. The album starts with four blinding pop hits, which you find yourself humming along to for the rest of the day. No one could keep that up - there's a lull midway through with some rather bland numbers, but the pace picks up again for a strong finish. The critics were justified.

Some great songs buried under a somewhat uninspiring sound

The production on here felt a bit timid and unimaginative. There’s a strong vein of weird, quirky, dancey oddness running through the album; sci-fi, fantasy, exotic references and all sorts of jolly hum-along themes, which often seem to get lost in a dull, straight-ahead modern medium-rock sound. I wish they’d been a bit braver and gone out on a limb a bit more with the sound they are making cos the songs themselves are great; lots of short punchy memorable tunes that do interesting things.

It’s not a mix that is going to do justice to one’s 3 grand hi fi, although it does capture the enthusiasm of the band - they’re in a hurry to get down on vinyl all their great ideas - but there’s no reason why you can’t do a bit more to it to give it some zing. Still I guess that’s not a fatal flaw and I look forward to hearing what they come up with next.
