The hidden track is the best...keep it hidden

When you are so fond of one particular track, for nostalgic reasons, that always helps to like other offerings from the same artist. That's the case here with me. I like their general sound, even if half of the songs on this album are rather bland. It's a well produced album with good powerful sounds, guaranteed to cheer me up on a winter morning.

Just a vehicle for a lovely voice

My thoughts on this one seemed to split fairly neatly into two strands: clever and interesting ideas in terms of the arrangements and production; but songwriting and singing which I struggled to get on with. Listening closely you can pick up on all sorts of nice touches with sampled sounds, varied instrumentation and a few well conceived string arrangements. However I'm not sure how integral these touches are to the songs as a whole, they often feel like they are really ideas stuck on (usually as the intros or outros) to songs that otherwise are a bit crude and unimaginative. There is also something of a lingering aftertaste with these tunes, they continue to rattle around in your head long after the record has finished, which indicates to me a lack of real depth in the composition.

A bit more of of a grandstanding, over-theatrical, Goth-tinged, power-chord vibe is going on as well, that separates them from otherwise similar-sounding Brit pop artists Suede, who I have to admit I enjoy a lot more. I think what also puts Suede above them is a lot more effort to make clever and and entertaining lyrics; good lyrics are rewarding in their own right, but they could also give purpose and impetus to songs which are largely fairly simple sing-along constructs. And also I don't like really his singing voice. Oh dear, hope I'm not being too unkind - I did kind of like it.
