A complete change of direction for Ms Goldfrapp results in a lovely psychedelic folk album. A bit of a curate's egg, but the good bits are lovely.

A great start but ends up drifting off into the background

This is a bit of a departure for Ms Goldfrapp from her previous retro electro glam disco type offerings. She’s gone all pastoral and folky on us and the album does start off wonderfully. The first two songs are lovely things; the second half of Little Bird she goes a bit mad on a Liz Fraser trip but it’s done so fantastically well you can easily find it in your heart to forgive. From there on in it seems to go off the boil somewhat, the songwriting is all a bit cruder and less imaginative, Eat Yourself being the main exception.

The latter stages of the album fail to ignite one's interest again - it's nicely polished stuff, multi layered with decent string arrangements but some of it feels a bit like later St Etienne albums where they were trying to catch a Sunday morning / suburban semi / 70s movie soundtrack sort of sound and it feels like a wistful, endless drift of Nothing Much, which I guess is what they’re after but doesn't seem like great music to me.

Not many tracks stand out as being individually great, but the album as a whole has a nice flow to it, I am happy with this on in the background when I'm doing 'stuff' and always have the temptation to hit 'play' again at the end. I prefer the beefier, anthemic tracks with plenty of instrumentation and vocals.
