On a quick skip through I think this does show some variety and ambition, but on a full session of listening not much seemed to happen within the songs. The singing is perhaps a bit limited, a nice enough feel but she’s not stretching her range much. That’s all okay if there was something else happening – perhaps some noise, distortion, electronics or maybe some soloing, instead we’ve got these endless, slightly dirgey, circling riffs that almost get interesting but which generally don’t quite manage it. The State is maybe the exception that proves the above rule, there’s a sort of driving Stereolab feel that works well, with a raw overdriven Farfisa organ type hook and a few electronic warbles at the end and it seems to add up to something. Through a lot of the rest of the album I did find my attention drifting, as the hooks aren’t quite there, in came smatterings of St Vincent or Goldfrapp, which tend to have the same shortcomings, and nothing really developed to justify each piece’s existence.

In Madrid / Rainbow Lollipop I found the most enticing, where it got a little bit hypnotic, mystical, electronic and almost slightly freaky. Circular Motion had some interesting sound effect colourings but missed any real song in there. Where I’m Going had something of an early Pink Floyd feel, especially the drums, this was nice but a bit shameless in its appropriation.

Some interesting bits here and there but largely I did find it drifted by without me.
