Mr Sylvian was on the cover of Sounds in Japan’s prime, being described as the world’s most beautiful man. Consequently it was difficult not to see his work tainted as a sort of empty, arty triumph of style. Perhaps he’s been fighting that image ever since and I find this exciting in that his recent work here feels like it has this drive of fierce, politically-tinged anger in his words. Banality of Evil is a good example of that.

You also have these fantastically imaginative arrangements, unusual instrumentation – wonderfully sophisticated and lovely. They’re all tied together well by the styling and the voices but it’s a real smorgasbord in terms of the sounds used here. I won’t bother listing all the instruments on this but there’s a lot and it’s never messy or confused or overdone. I don’t think there’s a song on here that isn’t good, which I can’t say often. Steve Jansen and Bernd Friedmann's percussive / drum programming work is splendid, on Wonderful World particularly. Stina Nordenstam adds a nice angular, Nordic vibe with her vocals.

I’ve kind of got used to David’s voice and quite like it, it used to annoy me, but it feels less affected now or perhaps I have just got used to it, however I can see how others might have an issue there. Otherwise I struggle to see why anyone wouldn't love travelling on this exotic, complex, fantastic-sounding journey.
