This lot are still going strong, but I find their first album from 1985 the best, with the most original and varied stuff on it. A great listen from start to finish.

An album that starts off with the feeling of a fairly typical 80s indie rock offering, but which picks up a head of steam and delivers a varied selection of styles over a nicely shaped collection of songs. The initial tracks did have a touch of that sort of wan, non-rock, half-arsed, fare that was the staple of the alternative music scene in Britain mid-80s, slightly off-key and trying hard not to try too hard. Having said all that, when done well, there were plenty of gems in there and this one shook off that vibe a bit, picking up the tempo and adding some fairly ambitious and enjoyable touches – female backing singing, banjo, oboe and a penny whistle, I think, on an Olde English mediaeval folk type thing, which I also quite enjoyed the vocal on. That vocal reminded me a bit of Peter Skellern, which I don’t suppose will be that much help to anyone. The vocal generally was perhaps a little unconvincing but, like the Prefab Sprout album, I felt I eventually got past a sound that had initially put me off to find some enjoyable stuff, with good songwriting.
