It's Bowie back in his heyday - difficult to beat.

Not his strongest album, but when it's good, as on the title track, it's very, very good.

This is very much a game of two halves, with Bowie sitting back on a big early lead during the second side of the album. At this point in his career he could seemingly do no wrong; he'd produced a string of successful albums and was one of the biggest artists in the world. He probably thought he could take a few risks and some of the better stuff on here is pretty crazy for a major mainstream artist; vocals in japanese, wild distorted guitar high in the mix, lots of screaming and shouting and his usual eccentric imagery. Some of it is very much of the times; early 80s new romantic tinged surrealism and some of it is him going out on a limb with his own ideas. I guess this was a bit of a turning point in that respect for him, he never really was the indicator of cutting edge music fashion from this point on.

The sound, at times, has a nasty 80s feel to it; dead sounding and lightweight, probably aimed at tinny radios and all-in-one hi-fis that were all the rage then.

Lyrically, it's the quirky, crazy, random nonsense that David Bowie usually comes up with but, also typically, there are some weirdly memorable sing-along gems amongst it all: "They got a message from the Action Man / I'm happy, hope you're happy too"; "To be insulted by these fascists is so degrading"; "Jimmy's guitar sound / Jealousies scream / Waiting at the lights / Know what I mean?" I sure do, mate, I sure do.

There's more to Bowie than Let's Dance...

A really pleasant surprise and an eduction. Listening to this album makes you realise just how unoriginal many modern artists are, there's so many influences here which have been copied since. Some great pop songs, which are mostly original and diverse throughout the album.
