No fackin abaht from Steve Albini

Tight as a gnat's chuff, no noodling, no nonsense riffing. Albini's lyrics bordering sociopathic as usual. Great live and the sort of band I would want to be in.

I like all the time signature changes, the choppy stop / start stuff and the gaps they leave all over the place, they are great with their timing and that is pretty effective. They are a bit fixated on one sort of sound, though, and there’s not much variety to escape into. They lack subtlety or colouration in the sound, which I found a bit disappointing given Mr Albini’s amazing CV as a producer. I know this stark / direct sound is what he is going for but I felt that leaves a bit missing. It’s interesting in that you can pick out all the elements being played but it could really do with something special elsewhere to bring it to life. The singing isn’t good enough to take the focus, nor the lyrics, which I felt would have benefited from some directness to match the sound, perhaps some political sloganizing which can work effectively for other aggressive sounding acts. The tunesmithing, too, failed to win me over.

The one I thought worked particularly well was Compliant, where all the stripped back rawness made sense and worked to its advantage, and kind of indicated it’s not too far off being terrific stuff.

This lot have all the right ingredients but somehow something is lacking for me. The vocals aren't capable enough to completent the powerful style of the music, the guitar work doens't have any particular edge that stands out, and the tunes just aren't that interesting. They are however very tight and competent and it's an enjoyable listen, just not memorable.
