I love peace, or at least, I think we, need some.

Arriving on the electro/hip-hop scene marginally before gangsta rap took over, this is an all time classic.These 19/20 year olds achieve a style of rap that many have failed to replicate since - so smooth, laid back, funky, and most importantly it's fun. Even though some may interpret the lyrics as purile nonsense, it is still extremely well crafted, and I'd rather listen to that than lyrics about gangs, gun wars and pimps/hos.

Some of the daft soundbites are annoying, dropping the score a peg or two, but overall there are so many hits here that it remains one of the top hip hop albums of all time.

Yeah, That's Kinda Clever

This was a pioneering album that spearheaded a hip-hop movement when these re-inventions of the sound seemed to happen regularly and invariably excited. That was then and hip-hop has changed.

The sound is really nicely arranged – simple, uncluttered with neat vocals that sit really well. There are more than a few great songs that still have a fresh and vibrant sound, it's great stuff I think.

It's the first album I knew where they really went overboard for these comic interlude stuff. It was an original idea and good luck to them but I guess I don’t really share their sense of humour. There is that kind of sense that they are all having fun amusing themselves and they’ve forgotten all about you, the listener, who they are supposed to be entertaining. Beyond the skit interlude stuff, I think it is a bit irritating and puerile lyrically too, I find it slightly difficult to be that concerned about Mr Squirrel and Poss de the Monkey and Plug One or Plug Two. There are some original, clever rhymes in here but, as a whole, this is a weak side to the album.

But, if you look beyond the words, it is full of well put together hook-laden, cleverly sampled, crisp sounding pieces.

Rap asks much more of you than regular music, it demands you to listen to the lyrics, which is fine if there is something interesting or amusing to say but often in rap there isn't. I really liked the complexities of the backing music in some of the tracks such as Change in Speak, Say No Go and Eye No but again generally tired of the lyrics which I often found didn't hold my attention and I often found dug into my skin.

Even so there were some tracks such as The Magic Number, Eye Know and Jenifer Taught Me which were memorable and enjoyable enough. Just too many tracks on this album.

Hippy Hip Hop? Prefer stuff like this and Jurassic 5 to aggressive rap material.

Some throwaway skits on this that pall after one listen but their good tracks stand up.

Unlike DJ Shadow their sampling sometimes borders on thievery.
