Let’s go to a disco / I’m ready for boogie

There’s a great standard of song writing and performance, from a genre that was at its commercial peak around this point. The Cuban / West Indies vibe sets this apart a bit from the typical disco stuff from the time, along with there seeming to be a deliberate attempt to make a successful coherent whole, rather than just collecting some big singles and other bits and pieces, which was the more typical approach to disco albums at the time. I remember this being a popular album back in the day, but it seems to have almost disappeared from the history books.

It keeps the relentless up-tempo vibe going all the way through, until reaching You, which is a schmaltzy disco ballad that is pretty painful to endure. The last track, Que Sera Mi Vida, goes for a bit more of an 80s style electro disco feel, rather than the 70s extended instrumental approach of the first four songs. These four are great funky things, I dig all the little solo passages, particularly the piano ones. Good time stuff.

It's a disco album

It's a carribbean/salsa/disco album, which bounces along at an infectious pace which you can't help getting into. I need to play this some more, but as far as I can tell, as this kind of music goes, this is up there with the best. Hard not to like.

Likeable pop from the fag-end of the disco era

I like the fact the songs on this are very long like proper 12 inch versions, and not 3 minute pop songs. This genre works best when tracks are strung out. There is a bit of a novelty factor with these guys, but in the age before sampling, computers etc, everything had to be played live and recorded in professional studios; this is no Birdy Song effort and the musical quality does show.
