Swell well well

No one else in the world likes this, but for me it acts as a healthy contrast to all the over-complicated, over-intricate, electronically produced albums that seem to be the trend now. Good honest three-piece indie rock songs which don't lose their appeal after many years of playing.

Swell very much have their own sound, with David Freel's distinctive vocals and particularly sharp drumming, and they certainly weren't out to jump on any bandwagons, hence their lack of success.

I can’t help feeling they shot their bolt a bit on the first number. This was the standout track for me which really did sound like an album closer. This one is nicely put together, with some good sounding elements: slidey bass, sparkly keyboard, a big barrage of fuzz guitar, nice little counterpoints in the vocals and neat guitar licks towards the end.

Overall, there are a few sort of Nirvana-eque sounds, particularly in Brigitte You Love Me - acoustic guitar strumming with exactly those sort of chords and at that pace. There's some good bits throughout, the uptempo ones work better for me but the slower ones sound a bit flat tonally and musically. It's really his voice that a find slightly off-putting, he hasn't got much of a range and not much accuracy nor emotional charge, which I think are all needed on the slower ones.
