It may well be historically inaccurate but I see Buddy Holly's work as being the year zero, the starting point of modern pop. This was the first successful example of the typical modern 4 piece band set-up and he was also well ahead of the pack in being responsible for writing the majority of the compositions that he performed. There's maybe a certain arrogance or even conceit evident in some of the lyrics but these are neatly crafted pieces, flawless in every line.

The first and last pieces feel over- sacchirined and over sanitized but inbetween these are unspoilt jewels. These two come across easy listening but otherwise the sound moves around murcurialy between styles - a little bit country, a little bit rock n roll, a bit rockabilly, a bit folk, a bit pop, both joyful and sad. Like a lot of music where a band moves into new territory the presence of some old elements (in this case the barbershop quartet style backing vocals) contrasting with the Fender sound and raw lead vocals really underline the direction forward.

Rave on...except you're dead

What would he have gone on to write had he lived is the main question I ask myself. Clearly a talent but this sounds so very very old now.

There's certainly some classics here but I do find the rather upbeat tempo of some of the more rock'n'roll tracks a bit irritating after a couple of listens.
