It's The Beatles

An entertaining album that's stood the test of time. Mostly good songs with varied instrumentation and all band members singing at times, which is nice.

What can you say about the beatles that hasn't already been said?

Not the best Beatles album. Had to see the wood for the trees as it's been hyped so much over the years, so it could only disappoint.

Considering the reverence in which this album is held, there really are a fair few duds on this one, in my humble opinion. Back in the day these my have been taken as interesting curios but I find some of these bordering on unlistenable. Try the ones I gave the thumbs down to above and see if that makes a good EP.

Some of it is fun and with amusing lyrical invention in places, "Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall" made me laugh, but these kind of things are thinner on the ground than you might expect. And the tone sometimes lets them down, She's Leaving Home could be a very moving piece about the disconnect between a daughter and her parents but the cheery 'bye-bye' vocals sabotage their attempt at pathos here, as does their Beatlesque smugness generally. It's the more upbeat, jolly ones that seem to work better and there is a cleverness and striking originality in arrangements at times, with nice touches of orchestration throughout. Still, any band that gets to their comfortable level of success and doesnt feel willing to try a few new tricks probably deserves to be shot.
