It's a grungy, dirgey, dark, moody sort of sound they create here but it's pretty relentless and unchanging and only the most determined of listeners could take more than a few of these songs at a time. I'd be impressed and somewhat concerned to meet someone who said they could play the album from beginning to end, never mind the whole 14-track re-issue. I guess that's got to be a major point when it's the album itself that's being judged. Shallow The Halo and Hollow Men are impressive creations but the sound that made them the band they were isn't quite there yet. All the instruments are at the echoey, reverby, harsh end of the scale, even Liz Fraser's vocals. Signs of greatness? For sure. Tough going all the same.

An unlovable mis-start, before wonderful things happened

Didn't think it was possible to find a CT album I didn't love, but this rather coarse debut is still struggling to find its way. Roll on treasure.

It's a drone, innit? Brings back memories of sleazy drunken nights on an unknown floor in Reading, the taste of dusty carpets and Lowenbrau, fag ash. The music has a similar vibe to that, kind of distant and misty.
