When I was 14 I used to sneak under the duvet with my mono radio cassette recorder, listening to Mike Allen on Capital Radio 95.8fm, etc etc. He was the best, and so were Run DMC. This album started everything, it has a lot to answer for...

Historically significant but maybe not such a great listen now

For better or for worse, this was the album that finally moved hip hop into the mainstream (it was for the worse, by the way). Pretty dated and pretty raw, the album still has moments of excitement and some great sounds. You've also got to thank them for paving the way for some monumental Public Enemy albums, so cheers for that.
